(How has the oil wealth affected the prospects of democratization in Essay

(How has the crude cover wealth affected the prospects of democratisation in the Arab Gulf) and ( Evaluate the role of civil society in - Essay slipPolitical science and economics studies pull in found that there is limitation of advances in democracy where countries in the Middle East expect vast oil reserves. Oil wealth has a long-term resultant on Middle east democracy efforts. While extraction activities normally take place everyplace an extended period, major(ip) oil discoveries take place during these countries peak production years (Ehteshami 37). Oil discoveries made in democratic countries such as Norway have no effect on their democratic trajectories. However, where oil is discovered in non-democratic countries, it is less likely that these countries will transition to democracy. Oil discovery has little effect on democratic countries politically. While Iran has been under theocratic rule for over 20 years, oil was discovered when they were a democracy, which can b e seen to date as the country holds regular elections compared to its other Middle Eastern oil producers. The country only became less democratic after the Western-led coup of 1953 before transitioning back to elected democracy. This is in contrast to Qatar that discovered oil as a monarchy and has not made any strides towards democracy (Ehteshami 37). Prior to the early 50s, Egypt had one of the most spirited democracies in the region with limited supplies of oil peaking in the mid 60s after which oil production declined from the 90s onwards. A similar history is shared by Tunisia, which was also a democratic country when they discovered oil. The relatively peaceful transitions in these countries are not a coincidence (Ehteshami 38). This is in stark contrast to Syria, whose major oil discoveries were made during authoritarian military rule. The transition from Bashar Al-Assads government to other has seen a bloody civil war erupt, as is the case with Iraq where oil discoveries were made during authoritarian rule. Oil rich non-democratic countries spend more on their military in order to stay in power, which enhances their political power and prevents the democratization of their countries. Lucrative reserves of oil also provide dictators with the incentive to want to stay in power longer since they fear they will loose everything if another leader comes in (Ehteshami 38). While civil society has played a critical role in the democratization of countries in Latin America and Eastern Europe, this has not been reflected in the Middle East. In this region, NGOs have been tamed and weakened since they can be co-opted using oil bills (Ehteshami 98). Meanwhile, the EU and the US have continued to emphasize how important it is to develop civil society. Funding by the west for Arab NGOs has seen a significant increase since the September 11 attacks. The amount of coin channeled to Middle Eastern countries by the US has tripled in the 12 years since. However, em powerment of these NGOs remains flawed and aimless because the countries leaders also have money that can co-opt them. Most of the NGOs in Arab countries are government organized with staffing and funding provided by the government. Their main idea in funding the NGOs has to do with managing and haughty change, rather than inspiring or instigating change (Ehteshami 98). Even where it is relatively easy to establish organizations that fight for democracy, these are still under strict

Subprime Mortgage Crisis - Essay ExampleHowever, what was more innovative in this whole episode is the fact that banks in order to hedge themselves against the high jeopardy lending through secrutization. Securitization is a process of bundling or pooling the non-liquid assets into marketability securities. The idea is to recoup the liquidity lost through the sanctioning and disbursement of the loans to subprime borrowers.(Hunton & Williams LLP,2005). There atomic number 18 various ways through which the securitization can take place. Most of the times, financial institutions did so by creating Special Purpose Vehicles in order to enjoy off-balance plane accounting not only to strenghten their balance sheets but keep the garbage let on of it. The problem started when the subprime borrowers started to default on their repayments. These defaults created a chain reaction of events which firstly overtook the banks but subsequently created supercharge economic problems for the econom y.The above graphical representation suggests the both traditional models of the mortgages and how default in both the models can trigger further damage.1 Technically subprime mortgages become a problem when at the default of the payments by the borrowers financial institutions face a mismatch in the currency flows. As delineate earlier that most of the financial institutions attempted to regain the lost liquidity through securitization by creating mortgage backed securities to match the cash inflows from the mortgage payments with the cash outflows from the payments to be made against those mortgage backed securities. When the inflows stopped due to default by the subprime borrowers, financial institutions, in order to keep their ratings intact, started to pay out for their obligations out of other resources. This than started to create a credit crunch in the economy as those resources which were technically should have been used in more productive resources were be utilized in repayment of the mortgage backed securities. Thus the available credit to the organizations and firms decreased and hence their output and productivity level started to decrease which slow and steadily put pressure on various other economic pressures and hence started one of the worst economic crisis of the century. It is believed that the subprime mortgage in United States jut at almost $1.3 trillion however it only comprises a tiny portion of the US GDP and many believe that at such small magnitude level, it may not impact the US economy as such. (Ramady, 2008). The future seems to be more bleak as one half to two thirds of the subprime loans ar Adjustable rate mortgages means that the interest rates on those mortgages ar going to increase when they fall due therefore there are estimations that more defaults are yet to come as at higher interest rates, the subprime borrowers may face further hardships to payback their due installments therefore it is feared that crisis are go ing to further aggravate rather than subside until and unless Federal Reserve Board (FED) does not

Information Overload Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

randomness Overload - Essay ExampleOn a day to day basis, the info-rich obtain nurture from the internet, newspapers, emails, television, faxes and telephone calls. In the midst of all the clatter, the info-rich atomic number 18 conscious that essential and valuable information is being conveyed (Miller, 2009). The challenge now lies in separating the unnecessary, uninteresting, and outdated information from the up-to-date, relevant, and vital (Miller, 2009). This is achievable by any organization if it changes its technical system or its social system or even both (Klingberg, 2008). Initially, when net plow technologies were introduced, their aim was to bring considerable improvements to the productiveness of workers however, these productivity benefits are yet to materialize (Klingberg, 2008). As a result, empirical scrutiny of the data has failed so far in establishing a considerably validatory relation between information technologies and productivity growth (Klingberg, 2008 ). Moreover, some people create even begun to wonder if the introduction of computers and other kinds of information technology has had a negative impact on productivity levels, since companies waste resources to generate, distribute, process and store paperwork, which, though adds up no value to the business, deflects peoples attention afar from productive work (Klingberg, 2008). ... Indeed, a wealth of precious information has been made accessible the remaining problem is to learn to manage that flood of information. Considering current technological and human constrictions, decision-makers are incapable of processing all the information which they receive (Klingberg, 2008). A number of managers complain that important issues are neglected due to the growing heaps of information which they have to review (Klingberg, 2008). Additionally, many companies are downsizing the assumption that computers are capable of effectively replacing people (Klingberg, 2008). However, information t echnologies happen to be ruff used as supplements they cannot alternate human skills as far as processing complicated information flows is concerned (Klingberg, 2008). When it comes to business models, content providers focus on selling information straight to consumers (Grochow, 1997). However, there some instances when attention, and not information, is scarce (Grochow, 1997). Businesses should contend for peoples time therefore, various successful business models of the future will have their basis in the economics of attention, which implies focusing on bringing out quality information to the people in a context that is meaningful (Grochow, 1997). Information production will still get motivation from profit incentives, with competition among substitutable information sources reducing the prices of the content of information itself (Grochow, 1997). Rather than expecting direct compensation for the creation of information, it is crucial for content providers to run their busines s as though it were gratis, and then figure out how to enhance relationships or come up with adjuvant products and

The Suspense and Atmosphere in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde Essay Example for Free

The suspicion and melodic phrase in The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde EssayAccording to the New Edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary, Suspense is defined as being the followingSuspense- state of usu. anxious uncertainty or expectation or waiting for information.According to that same dictionary, the definition of Atmosphere is the followingAtmosphere- mental or moral environment esp. artistic or emotional pervading tone or mood, esp. attractive one air (in any place), esp. w. ref. to cause on those present. The definition of Setting according to the New Edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary isSetting- environmentThe story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is set in Nineteenth Century capital of the United Kingdom. and then the setting or environment was a largely Victorian one. This would involve the lack of any motorised vehicles and at night gas lamps would light the streets.capital of the United Kingdom would perk up had a very defined poverty argumentation, which meant large and noticeable differences between rich and poor. The gradeings and streets would be very much in the style as shown below in this picture of Victorian LondonThe above picture of Tottenham Court Road, in the late nineteenth century, illustrates very well what the average London street would have sense of smelled like at the time of the story. It displays images of a busy, bustling thoroughfare with horses and carts sweeping across it, an image typical of the era.In the story, Mr Hydes residence is verbalise to be in Londons Soho. At that time, this particular area of the city had a very bad reputation for prostitutes, criminals and other undesirables. This is a reflection of the demeanor the indorser is encouraged to view Mr Hyde, who himself was an undesirable. It is also representative of the attitude towards what was commonly perceived as an underclass. Dr Jekyll on the other hand, was a cultured, professional gentleman, and lived in a salutary part of town. It was in that locationfore frowned upon by polite society when he was found to be associating with a ruffian such as Mr Hyde. It was seen as being a very unusual act for someone of the Doctors social standing, to mix with an individual who lived in Londons Soho. The setting of parts of the story in Soho, the underbelly of Victorian London, with its sickly appearance, attractiveness to criminals and home to the disadvantaged, contributes to the gener on the wholey uneasy standard atmosphere pervading the story. For example, on pages four and five, Mr Enfield, a lawyer and friend of Jekylls, is walking down a prosperous market place street. It is pleasant and charming, yet just around the corner, the setting changes, and this has an immediate effect on the atmosphere. Two doors from one corner, on the left hand going east, the line was broken by the entry of a court and just at that point, a certain sinister block of building thrust forward its gable jetty on the street. It was two storeys high showed no window, nothing but a door on the lower storey and a blind forehead of discoloured wall on the upper and bore in every feature the marks of prolonged and sordid negligence. The door, which was equipped with neither bell nor knocker, was blistered and distained. Tramps slouched into the recess and struck matches on the panels children kept shop upon the steps the schoolboy had tried his knife on the mouldings and for close on a generation no one had appeared to drive away these haphazard visitors or to repair their ravages. The quote I have chosen, illustrates how the setting in which the author chooses to place the action, advise affect the contributors interpretation of the mood of the moment. After denotation that passage the atmosphere is immediately intimidating, a feeling reinforced by the thrust of the gable of the building. The latter takes on the characteristics of a face, personifying its owner with subtle references to merciful physiology and dis figuration e.g. a (blind) forehead, scars and blisters as sewer be found on skin, and the door representing a mouth. The tramps and the children are like parasites which are found on unclean bodies and the lack of windows suggests that not only are passers-by prevented from looking inside, but that the occupant of the building cannot or does not want to see out. These are all surd visual images, deliberately intended by the author, to create an impression in the readers mind. In this way, a setting can be used when a source wants to influence his audience into turn overing about a character, event, or location in a certain way.The weather also plays an important part in the setting of an event. It can be used by the writer to evoke different emotions in the reader fear, excitement, happiness, unhappiness, suspicion, romance or even relief. These are all essential elements to create suspense or atmosphere within a story or dialogue.A good example of this can be found on page fifty -threeIt was a wild, cold, seasonable night of March, with a pale moon, lying on her back as though the wind had bend her, and a flying wrack of the most diaphanous and lawny texture. The wind made talking difficult and flecked blood into the face. It seemed to have swept the streets unusually excess of passengers. In this case, the weather is a key element of the setting, in particular the wind. The author has used it to emphasise the feeling of being swept brutally on by a powerful force beyond our control. Even the moon itself appears to have tilted and changed its appearance, with the cutting wind inflicting pain on the few pedestrians stalwart enough to venture abroad. His deliberate use of the treatment passengers reinforces the feeling for the reader that they too are on a journey travelling into the unknown, where evil and riskiness lurk. The reader is now filled with foreboding and slight uneasiness due to the unpredictability (like the weather itself) of what might hap pen nextOn page fifty-four, there is another good example of how weather can play a large and important part in the setting of a story, helping to bring a particular atmosphere. The square, when they got there, was all full of wind and dust, and the thin trees in the garden were lashing themselves along the railing. The reference to the weather is vital to the image of the scene. suffocate dust pollutes the air and the railings are cage-like, preventing escape. The thin, malnourished trees give the impression that they are punishing themselves, whilst at the same time seeking refuge against the elements. This is indicative of the forcible and psychological condition of Dr. Jekyll himself at this point in the story.A third example of the impact that the weather has on the atmosphere, occurs on pages forty-nine to fifty, when Mr Utterson is on his way to meet Dr JekyllThe court was very cool and a little damp, and full of premature twilight, although the sky, high up overhead, was st ill bright with sunset. This reference to the weather symbolises the fracture personality of Dr Jekyll. The struggle between the light above and the darkness below, represents the conflict between good and evil. This presents a rather disturbing, image reinforcing our assumption that darkness is potential to prevail. The sinister aspect of this being, that darkness is the absence of light, and goodness. All through the story we have the impression that something is not quite right. This is reinforced by way of aeonian references to the weather. There is always something strange and unsettling about it. This is a recurring theme throughout. The examples above, illustrate how weather as a part of the setting can build up the suspense and atmosphere of a scene, a dialogue or the tensions affecting an individual character. The writer assumes (successfully) that his use of particular imagery and metaphor go out induce certain reactions in his readers e.g. red for danger, darkness for impe nding doom etc. He does this to almost manipulate the reader into thinking about events or people in a way that enables him to build up the atmosphere and suspense within the story.Another example of this can be found on page thirty-two, when Mr Utterson is walking across the streets of SohoThe dismal quarter of Soho seen under the changing glimpses, with its muddy ways, and slatternly passengers, and its lamps, which had never been extinguished or had been kindled afresh to fleck this mournful re-invasion of darkness, seemed, in the Lawyers eyes, like a district of some city in a nightmare. The writer cleverly get a lines the streets of Soho so that the reader immediately feels a sense of disapproval for not only the neglected appearance of the place but also its unkempt inhabitants (including the infamous Mr Hyde). His use of the word mournful to describe nightfall evokes an unpleasant feeling that bad things may happen under the cover of darkness. Not only Mr Utterson experience s the nightmare scenario but the reader too can identify with his need to escape and awake from danger. However, Robert Louis Stevenson does not always use the setting to create an unpleasant atmosphere. For instance on page one speed of light and three, when describing a moment of clarity for Dr Jekyll, he uses it to create a somewhat uplifting atmosphere.I was stepping leisurely across the court after breakfast, drinking the iciness of the air with pleasure,When using the word chill the writer evokes a feeling of clarity within the reader, a clarity that Dr Jekyll himself is momentarily experiencing. This creates, if but shortly, an atmosphere of consent and some relief. It represents a sort of snap back to reality for the reader as well as Dr Jekyll.Mostly I have discussed how the setting has touched the atmosphere within the story, in order to evoke specific emotions within the reader. Suspense however is an emotion within itself and I will now look at how the setting directly affects the suspense in the story. This can be found at many points within the book, as it is a very raise and captivating story. On page fifty-six for instance when Poole knocks on the cabinet door to inform Dr Jekyll that Mr Utterson wishes to speak to him. The Author talks about, the red baize of the cabinet door. loss is a classically forbidding colour. It is a psychological message to the reader, implying that whatever or whomever is in there, does not want to be seen or disturbed.Red can also be a colour that is associated with the Devil. Coincidentally, the cabinet (for Dr Jekyll and those that know him) is also associated with evil, as this is the place where he retires to whenever strange things start happening. This all helps to create suspense, and the reader wonders what awful things are behind that door, and what it is hiding? The use of these kinds of allegories build up tension and adds some mystery to the story, thus making the reader want to pass over in order to fi nd out what happens. All these elements, the weather, the buildings, the colours and the people, play a vital part in the setting of a scene or event. The examples that I have given, demonstrate that all of these factors can play a role in creating the atmosphere and suspense within a story.Certain word combinations can cause the reader to experience many different emotions. Therefore by using these word combinations, the writer can encourage the reader to think what he or she wants them to think. In this way atmosphere and suspense are intentionally created through the setting, to suit what the writer wants the reader to think. In the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, these methods have proved to be essential to developing the storyline. Therefore I can successfully conclude that the setting in the story of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde contributes to the atmosphere and suspense in a major and very effective way.

Life in times of Second World War Essay Example for Free

Life in times of Second World War EssayI think its tougher to live through a war for an ordinary citizen than a soldier. A soldier in the battle field has little else to worry but about the next battle feature with his protest fate. Whats more, a soldier always believes that the final outcome of the war can be influenced by his actions. thitherfore he has a smell of participation and assurance to the results. However, for a civilian, a person detached from the field of action, there is nothing to do but to wait and hope. M any(prenominal) would say this topographic point is far better than to risk life in the battlefield however, my personal experience says that the feeling of inaction and helplessness that comes being a civilian is choking. There is nothing more depressing than listening to war news while being unable to influence its outcome in any significant way. I was suffering from stomach ulcer when the war had started and the military doctors had refused to accept me in the services. Its true that as a wartime civilian I actively diligent myself in health institutions, where serving the wounded gave a sense of contribution to the war efforts and belongingness to the conflict that had so deeply afflicted the lives of over 10 ace thousand million people. The first phase of the war Although we had declared war upon Germany in 39, there was no feeling of anticipation of war or sense threat anywhere in capital of the United Kingdom. No one really took the announcement any more serious than a brawl between two children (Wilson, 41).I was a teacher in a boys school and the shining and exciting typesetters cases of children represented as if an exciting cricket match was awaiting then. Then everything suddenly changed. I heard with a growing sense of threat the advancements that belligerent German armies made through continental Europe Wood and Depster, 155). It was incredible how nothing seemed to footstall before them. Belgium, Poland, France, ea ch falling like a pack of cards before. And then the first bomb struck London in September 40.So far I can recall, there was no panic, but a doomed sense of determination that we all felt, eager to carry out our own duties in the process (Fusell, 29). The local authorities had tutored us well on the use of gas masks and bunkers in times of assails. Blackouts were everyday event. Whenever there was a raid by German warplanes, which was daily, the entire city switched itself off, plunging everything in absolute darkness. It was a unique experience-a sense of thrill combined with dread as our warplanes rose blue to combat the German bombers.(Fusell, 15) I took shelter in a large bunker that was built in the back park. Many people, with a garden quadruplet in their internal, had built Anderson shelter and stayed put there. Many like me, choose the public shelter. I dont know about others, but meet sitting there quietly with so many people around inspired me with comfort and securit y (Air Ministry, 16). Public shelters were less safe of course, and being of bigger dimensions they were easily prone to attack. As it happened, unfortunately some of them were struck by bombs and many innocent lives were lost (Fusell, 15).If anything this further resolved us to face the flight of steps German menaces. Every morning when I left the shelter and moved through streets of London, smoldering buildings, shattered vehicles and running ambulances met the sight. I knew people had died during the German raids and it gave me a guilty feeling, having survived the night when many of fellow citizens could not. The bombing lasted for two full months and every day I followed the same routine of spending the night in the dark, blacked out shelter. After the end of bombing by end of October, I thought perhaps things would return to normalcy. I really wanted that. The scarred face of London, the wreckage of buildings and lives lost closeed me with disquiet. But as news came pouring in of German advances and expansion of war in Africa and Asia, I did not see any end to the conflict (Wilson, 65). The daily life had suddenly changed its character. In almost a complete reversal of the situation, the security, comfort and ease of former days were replaced by a continued sense of urgency and parsimony that pervaded the entire London Wood and Depster, 155). Gone were the days of daily parties, weekly sojourns, weekends at country houses, and the bounteous English life style.I had personally been only occasionally involved in these attractions, but as I used to travel from my school to home in the evening, music and revelry were heard from many of the pretty bungalows and houses-this was in the pre war day. It had all suddenly died out. Most of the men had left for war, and women had stepped out to fill the vacant positions Wood and Depster, 155). England did not produce sufficient quantity of food to meet its own requirements and imported most of the food grains and i tems for its consumption (Wood and Depster, 155).Wartime conditions had severely dependent the food supply and we saw implementation of rationing system, where food was allocated through family quota (Gorrora, 71). I was never a glutton, but over the years, tea had become one of my daily requirements. With war, rationing and quota, tea vanished from the market. Other items of daily requirements-sugar, beef, and milk also became extremely scarce. No one complained of the scarcity, but everyone felt the pinch of it. After the London bombing I volunteered to join an emergency medical camp, which brought a constant engagement and action in my life. But it was not the type of engagement I could cherish. Meeting severely injured men, women and children, soldiers who had lost their limbs or were dying due to diseases, gangrene and fatal wounds was an unbearable exercise for my will and personal stamina (Wilson, 71). However, despite my personal sense of despair, there was a rising hope wi thin England that it would stand against the Axis powers and this hope in itself was a motivation enough for me to trim in the hospital day and night. There were many nights in continuation when I hardly closed my eyes for an hourOur hope and endurance last paid off when after 5 years of bloodshed, the war finally culminated. We were already prepared by the general tidings for this news, but the immense residuum brought by even this known information is indescribable (Wilson, 101). It appeared that after being buried alive for years, I had once again appeared on the surface, free to breather the fresh air, free to see the sun, free to live again. Reference Wilson, E.
